The Carrion Vine

The Carrion Vine

Prologue Exerpt

Vita Kew and her daughter Ellie were vacationing in Western Poland when they were captured by the Russians, while fleeing from the Germans at the onset of World War II. Caught up in the drama of changing political boundaries and the vagaries of war, they were shipped to a Siberian labor camp with hundreds of thousands of Polish citizens, as Communist Russia began to expatriate the countries along its Western border. Their story is written in a docu-drama format because Vita's diary, upon which it is based, was understandably incomplete in many details, and some incidents were sketched from Ellie's memory only. Above all, however, this is a sincere and thrilling story, told with a clear voice.

Author's Note

The Carrion Vine is a historically accurate, non-fiction account based upon the diary my mother kept, fleshed out with my vivid memories as a 14 year-old girl. It is written in a narrative style in the thirdperson, like a short story. I began writing in a diary-type style, but it became too hard, too emotional and too personal for me to continue. I had to remove myself and look at it from an observer's standpoint and recount all the events objectively as if they were happening to someone else. Also some of the character's names have been changed at their request to protect those who are still in Russia. Our story is representative of the unspeakable treatment of hundreds of thousands of innocent people by the Russian government. It is accompanied by photos and a detailed map tracing the journey from Warsaw, Poland to Siberia and the ultimate return via central, then southern Russia, over the Caspian Sea to Persia and then to India.

Just appeared at a book club in Woodstock,IL talking about the Carrion Vine.  The group was very engaged and complimentary.  The hard cover book is sold out, but good news, it can be obtained through Amazon Kindle and Nook as an e-book for only $3.99.

I am currently writing a sequel to the Carrion Vine.  Hope to have it out beginning of next year.
